An international story, told through the eyes of the Caribbean.

El Grid follows what the region is doing to keep the lights on, while getting ready for the energy demands of the future. Beginning with the solutions proposed in Puerto Rico, we'll continue with visiting neighboring islands and countries to see how other innovators are tackling the same problems.

While many are looking for who to blame, El Grid highlights the heroes who are making a change for the better.

Meet the director

Halana Mediavilla is the founder, director and producer of FilmKik. Born and raised in Puerto Rico, she founded FilmKik in Santa Clara, California in 2012 and spent five years as a video producer and director at Google. In 2021 she brought the company home to Puerto Rico.

Today FilmKik makes original documentaries like Dirty Coin, Stranded and Bob the Beveler, driven by a curiosity about how modern life actually works. Dirty Coin was made independently and has played more than 500 screenings in over 200 cities and 43 countries, winning more than 23 awards, including Best National Documentary at the Puerto Rico Film Festival in 2025.

In more than 17 years of production, her work has reached over 500 million views. She has filmed at the Vatican, the White House and in jungles on four continents.

You may find her name written as Halana or Alana. The H is silent in Spanish, so you'll see it both ways.

Help us reach a rough cut by supporting the project.

Multiple distributors are interested in El Grid, but no one has fully commissioned the film yet - they want to see a rough cut first (the first full version of the film).

We're funding the rough cut ourselves, and we're looking for supporters to help us get there. Your backing goes toward filming and editing.
